Running a successful beauty business takes more than top-notch talent—it takes business sense too! Beauty school sharpens your skills, but it doesn’t always teach you how to make money with them.
At Salt Creek, our mission goes beyond providing clean, beautiful spaces. We want every tenant to feel empowered as a business owner. One of the ways we do that? Business education.
Earlier this month, we hosted our second Lunch & Learn—a free business class for our tenants. This one was all about boosting your business through social media. Trey Thayer, the Social Media Director for the Professional Pickleball Association, taught the class and crushed it. He covered how to build content into your routine and even gave a plug-and-play template for posting five times a week. It was a hit, and our tenants loved it. We’re already looking forward to the next one!
Until then, here are two mindset shifts that can help any beauty pro level up:
Mindset Shift #1: Clients Don’t Just Show Up—They’re Attracted to Value
If you have a small business, you are a marketer. And marketing is the what keeps your business alive! At its core, marketing is adding value. But what does adding value actually mean?
Here’s a simple breakdown that I like to use: Adding value = telling stories + educating + keeping your commitments.
Think of your business and ask yourself:
- How are you adding value to your potential clients and current clients?
- Are your social media posts doing more than showing your work?
- Are you connecting, entertaining, or solving problems?
Think about your favorite Instagram accounts. Why do you follow them? Probably because they make you laugh, teach you something, or tell a story you can relate to. The same goes for your business.
Chances are, you are already doing at least one of these. Now that you know what “these” are, do them more and on purpose.
Try this: Post twice this week using this simple framework: 📌 Tell a story — why you started, a recent client success, or a behind-the-scenes moment. 📌 Teach something — a quick tip, myth-buster, or common mistake to avoid.
Remember: Progress beats perfection. You’re already adding value just by being you. Now do it on purpose, and watch what happens.
Mindset Shift #2: You’re Not Just a Stylist—You’re a Business Owner
It doesn’t matter if you’re on commission, renting a booth, or running your own suite—you’re the CEO. And CEOs know their numbers.
Since it’s early in the month, let’s take a quick check-in.
Try this:
- Open your Venmo or bank account.
- Write down what you’ve earned so far this month.
- Write down what you’ve spent on your business.
- Jot down where you left off when you finish Step 3 (so it’s easy to start again next week).
- Set a weekly reminder to do this every Monday.
Boom—by the end of the month, you’ll have your first simple Profit & Loss statement (aka P&L). No software needed. Just consistency. With an up-to-date P&L, you’ll gain powerful insights into what’s working well (do more of that), you can feel confident in your pricing, and (among a lot of other benefits) your taxes will be way less stressful!
What you measure, grows. The more attention you give your business, the more confident and in control you’ll feel.
Final Thoughts
The right mindset changes everything.
Start here:
- Add value intentionally
- Own your role as a business owner
